Reader question:

Who is covered under my auto insurance in Chicago?

Jackie

Good question, Jackie.

It’s a subject that often comes up because most of the time the text of your auto insurance policy in Chicago isn’t all too clear. You might have to hassle a car insurance agent or read the policy several times to figure it out, but even then you cannot always be certain of who is covered under your auto insurance in Chicago.

First of all, let’s state the obvious. You are covered under your policy for auto insurance in Chicago, as are any other named drivers on your policy. It doesn’t matter who they are or where they live, if they are on your policy then they are covered under your auto insurance in Chicago.

Beyond that, there are a couple of more groups of people who are also covered under your auto insurance in Chicago. The first group is members of your household. This does not mean, as it seems, anybody who lives in your house and drives your car. It has the more specific meaning of being anyone who lives in your house and is related to you by marriage, adoption, or blood. So that means your spouse, child, stepchild, grandmother, and so on, so long as they live with you.

The second not so obvious group of people that are covered under your policy for auto insurance in Chicago are your friends and other relatives. However, there is a clause attached to this. They are only covered by your policy for auto insurance in Chicago if they

  • have your permission to drive your car, or
  • have reason to believe that you would give them permission to do so.

The trouble on that second part is that it is often very difficult to prove that your friend or relative had no reason to believe that you would have allowed them to drive your car.

Now, while these groups are covered under your auto insurance in Chicago, you have to remember that insurance follows the car, not the driver. They are only covered under your policy so long as they are driving one of the vehicles listed on the policy.

Reader’s Question:

How will I compare vehicle auto in Chicago so that I end up with the best deal in Chicago?

Morgan

Chicago IL

Finding the right insurance deal in Chicago can be quite daunting especially when you do not know a particular insurer. What you can do to compare vehicle insurance in Chicago and get the best deal is to ask for quotes from every insurer in town. You can get a copy of their names from the insurance company listing in the business directory. Once you have the list, call each one of them to inquire about their policies. Determine which among the insurers offer the lowest prices and the types of coverages under those offers. Ask for quotes so that you can compare vehicle insurance in Chicago more easily. After you have ranked the insurers based on their prices, do another ranking by reputation. Reputation in this instance refers to the insurers’ efficiency in terms of claims processing. You can get feedback from people who are already insured in these insurers. Then, combine the services and the price ranking of each. From there, you will know which insurers are among the top three in terms of both factors. Finally, to compare vehicle insurance in Chicago, you should choose the insurer that is most helpful. Service is very important aside from low prices. When you have both, it means you already have the best deal

Reader’s Question:

I was told that I need to present proof of financial responsibility here in Chicago in order to get my drivers license back, how do I do that?

Kyle

Chicago, IL

That’s right. If you got your drivers license suspended due to reckless driving, incurring too many moving violations, DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) arrest, for driving without proof of your drivers license or without carrying proof of car insurance coverage, or for having a poor driving record, you will be considered as a high-risk driver and for everyone’s mutual protection, you will be required to show proof of financial capacity to pay anyone you may injure, and any property you may damage, in the event your risky driving behaviors causes a car accident or collision.

In order to provide proof to the Office of the Secretary of State in Illinois (which handles reinstatement of licenses and other motoring administrations in your state) that you have adequate financial responsibility, and should therefore get your driving privileges reinstated, you will need to find a company that can file an SR22 Insurance in Chicago. Please note that not all insurance carriers are authorized to do this so it is best to contact the Secretary of State’s office for a list of carriers, or you may go on the web and use online directories to do this.

You may also use the free search tool on this website to easily get a list of authorized SR22 insurance companies. You will also get the chance to compare for the most competitive rates and policies available online.
