Reader’s Question:
I have a motorcycle insured and registered in my name. Will others be able to drive it on the street if they are not listed as a driver?
Gary
Chicago IL
State laws very regarding motorcycles, especially bike insurance. Some states may require that each motorist has insurance while other states may mandate just that the car is insured. In the latter states it is likely that the insurance policy would cover others who use it, just as if the friend was borrowing a different motor vehicle, like you automobile.
I suggest that you check with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles or with the Insurance Regulator in Chicago IL to verify about the state’s motorcycle insurance laws. Beyond this information you can also verify with your insurance provider. Terms of policies and insurance company’s guidelines can vary so check with your insurance carrier to check if they say your bike coverage extends to others who use it that you give permission to ride your motorcycle.
