Reader’s Question:

I was told that I need to present proof of financial responsibility here in Chicago in order to get my drivers license back, how do I do that?

Kyle

Chicago, IL

That’s right. If you got your drivers license suspended due to reckless driving, incurring too many moving violations, DUI (Driving Under the Influence) or DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) arrest, for driving without proof of your drivers license or without carrying proof of car insurance coverage, or for having a poor driving record, you will be considered as a high-risk driver and for everyone’s mutual protection, you will be required to show proof of financial capacity to pay anyone you may injure, and any property you may damage, in the event your risky driving behaviors causes a car accident or collision.

In order to provide proof to the Office of the Secretary of State in Illinois (which handles reinstatement of licenses and other motoring administrations in your state) that you have adequate financial responsibility, and should therefore get your driving privileges reinstated, you will need to find a company that can file an SR22 Insurance in Chicago. Please note that not all insurance carriers are authorized to do this so it is best to contact the Secretary of State’s office for a list of carriers, or you may go on the web and use online directories to do this.

You may also use the free search tool on this website to easily get a list of authorized SR22 insurance companies. You will also get the chance to compare for the most competitive rates and policies available online.

Reader’s Question:

Will Illinois female car insurance companies provide discounts even to a college student?

Liv

Chicago IL

Female drivers, whether young or old, are generally given better rates compared to male drivers. Based on quantitative studies, while female drivers could get into as many accidents as men drivers could, the seriousness of the accidents differ. It is also found out that women driver are less prone to speeding compared to men. Speeding is associated to accidents.

A college student then can get from Illinois female car insurance companies discounts on top of the lower rate provided that she meets some requirements. For one, getting a good grade in school can result to a substantial discount. The grade need not even be stellar. Some only require a B average to get from Illinois female car insurance companies a 20 percent discount. This is already a big incentive for students to study harder and maintain that average.

Also, Illinois female car insurance companies will give discounts to college students whose cars are not modified or do not register a high mileage. If you are tempted to change your rims to alloy, don’t. If you want spoilers, don’t do it. Making your car look fancier will probably increase the premium. A low mileage can also lessen your premium. If there is no need to drive, then, don’t. Your body can do with some exercise.

Reader’s Question:

I am 65 years old and don’t earn as much as I used to anymore. I need to get an insurance that would be good for me and my budget. What should I consider before buying senior auto insurancein Chicago?

Louis

Chicago IL

Car insurance for senior drives is important, considering that they are regarded as high-risk drivers. Records show that drivers over the age of 70 have an extremely high rate of fatal car accidents, usually caused by physical handicap or not paying close attention to the road. If giving up driving is not part of your options, maybe you may consider getting senior auto insurance instead.

Since most senior drivers usually live on fixed income from their pension or retirement funds, it is a must that they find a senior auto insurance policy that is both reasonable and comprehensive. Here are some things you need to think about before going out to buy senior auto insurance:

1.) Review your credit history. A clean credit slate can afford you discounts from insurance providers.

2.) Make sure that your automobile is both stylish and comfortable. Having a good, reasonably-priced car contributes a lot to having a spotless driving record, which in turn, helps in getting additional discounts. You may want to check with the Highway Loss data Institute to find out which cars have the lowest repair costs. Cars with safety features like airbags and automatic braking devices also get more discounts.

3.) Kudos goes to drivers who only use their vehicles to run errands within the town or city. Senior drivers who have low mileage also stand to receive discounts from insurance providers.

4.) Get as many insurance quotes as you can. This will allow you to compare prices and haggle for discounts. If you can afford it, do consider higher deductibles. This could account for additional savings.

Reader’s Question:

A friend of mine here in Illinois has been caught driving under the influence one Friday night. I’m a little curious. Is he going to lose his car insurance policy, or will the premiums just go up?

David

Chicago, IL

When it comes to driving, your friend’s foremost problem is that he is going to lose his driver’s license. But the time will come when he will be able to drive again. So, what will happen to his car insurance coverage then? There are two possibilities: Either his car insurance policy will be canceled, or its premium will skyrocket.

People who have records of drinking and driving are considered high risks by car insurance companies. Many of them won’t even consider selling a car insurance policy to one who has a DUI record. Those who do might require a certificate of financial responsibility or SR-22. This certificate gives the Secretary of State the authority to suspend the insurance policy when it is canceled or when it has expired. One may get an SR-22 from an insurance company authorized to release it. This will be sent to the Secretary of State and will be used to monitor the car insurance coverage of drivers with problematic records. The State of Illinois gives drivers two other options. One may deposit cash in the amount of $55,000 to the State Treasury instead of obtaining an SR-22. He may also file a surety or real estate bond which must be approved by a court.

Shopping for Auto Insurance Online Illinois IL

Reader’s Question:

Hi there. I’m shopping around online for new auto insurance. Do you think it’s okay to buy my auto insurance from the smaller brands?

Pam

Chicago, IL

Hello there, Pam. Well, it’s good that you’re shopping around online. That’s a good way to find the best deal in town. It’s true that there are a lot of companies selling auto insurance these days, and some companies offer rates lower than others. If I were you, though, I would try to look at the big-name brands first and see if they can fit into your budget.

I’m sure that the auto insurance companies that offer really low prices are tempting. However, wouldn’t you rather have the peace of mind if you were with an insurance company that you are sure will be there if you do get into an accident? Keep in mind there are a lot of scammers out there that may use extremely low quotes to lure you into buying auto insurance, but these companies may not have the financial capability to pay out when you do make a claim. I’m not telling you to disregard the smaller companies altogether, just to be wary and ensure that you put your money with an auto insurance company that you think is reliable.

Why don’t you get in touch with your agent in Illinois and ask him what he thinks of the auto insurance companies you’re looking at?

Car Insurance Rate Illinois IL

Reader’s Question:

How will the accident (fender-fender), where I am at-fault, affect my car insurance rates at renewal if I did not make a claim?

John

Chicago IL

Since you were at-fault in the accident and your insurance company became aware of this either because this was on your driving record or you informed them, your premium will likely increase at renewal, even though you did not make a claim, the company finds you to be a risk. The car insurance rates in Chicago IL will be affected depending on the rating system of the company.

There are cases when a surcharge or points are assigned to the driver who caused the accident and/or claimed against the policy. Some companies do not increase the insurance rates of driver who has a clean record for more than 5 years if the he/she is at-fault in a relatively minor car accident.

A major accident where the driver is at-fault can increase his/her insurance premium. However, an major accident that involves a serious bodily injury can result in a severe insurance and legal consequences. There can also be huge rate increase or a policy cancellation, subject to the law of
the state.

You can contact your insurance provider to find out more about their rating system and by how much will your premium increase because of the fender-bender.
